EFFECT OF PENTACHLOROPHENOL ON SELECTED SOIL ENZYME ACTIVITIES IN A CHILEAN ANDISOL R.C. Suelo Nutr. Veg.
Diez J,M. Cristina; Gallardo A,Felipe; Saavedra,Gisselle; Cea L,Mara; Gianfreda,Liliana; Alvear Z,Marisol.
The activities of laccase, Mn-peroxidase, phosphatase and dehydrogenase were studied in a Chilean Andisol (Temuco Serie) contaminated with pentachlorophenol (PCP). Experiments were conducted on the top of 0-20 cm soil, adding different concentrations of PCP (0.41, 4.1 and 41 mg kg-1). Enzymatic activities and residual concentrations of PCP were evaluated in soil incubated at 25 ± 1 ºC for 112 days. Enzyme activities of PCP-treated soil varied according to the PCP concentration added. For instance, an inhibitory effect on Mn-peroxidase activity was not observed during incubation at the three levels of PCP, whereas acid phosphatase activity was only affected by the 0.41 mg kg-1 PCP treatment. By contrast, laccase and dehydrogenase activities were negatively...

Feeding effects of cottonseed and its co-products on the meat proteome from ram lambs Scientia Agricola
Paim,Tiago do Prado; Viana,Pauline; Tilburg,Mauricio Fraga van; Moura,Arlindo de Alencar; Souza,Jurandir Rodrigues de; McManus,Concepta; Abdalla,Adibe Luiz; Louvandini,Helder.
ABSTRACT: Gossypol easily pairs with lysine side chains and enzymes involved in the cellular growth process. The effect of gossypol (a compound present in cotton co-products) in ruminant metabolism and meat quality is not yet clear. This study was undertaken in order to evaluate the effects of cotton co-products in lamb muscle proteome. Twenty-four Santa Inês ram lambs, 5-months old (20.6 ± 1.9 kg), were randomly assigned to four treatments: control (without cottonseed), whole cottonseed, cottonseed meal and high oil cottonseed meal. At 95 days into the experiment, lambs were slaughtered and samples from Longissimus dorsi were collected. Proteins were extracted and analyzed by 2-D electrophoresis. Spots showing a significant effect from the treatment (the...

Growth and enzymatic responses of phytopathogenic fungi to glucose in culture media and soil BJM
Costa,Beatriz de Oliveira; Nahas,Ely.
The effect of inoculation of Aspergillus flavus, Fusarium verticillioides, and Penicillium sp. in Dystrophic Red Latosol (DRL) and Eutroferric Red Latosol (ERL) soils with or without glucose on the total carbohydrate content and the dehydrogenase and amylase activities was studied. The fungal growth and spore production in culture medium with and without glucose were also evaluated. A completely randomized design with factorial arrangement was used. The addition of glucose in the culture medium increased the growth rate of A. flavus and Penicillium sp. but not of F. verticillioides. The number of spores increased 1.2 for F. verticillioides and 8.2 times for A. flavus in the medium with glucose, but was reduced 3.5 times for Penicillium sp. The total...

MICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF DARK RED LATOSOL SAMPLES STORED AT DIFFERENT TEMPERATURES Rev. Microbiol.
Vieira,Francisco Cleber Sousa; Nahas,Ely.
The enzymatic activity of soil samples stored at temperatures of 5 to -12oC and at room temperature for 0-32 weeks was determined. While alkaline phosphatase and dehydrogenase activity was decreased compared to control in samples stored at low temperatures, acid phosphatase activity showed no significant change.

Seasonal fluctuations of bacterial population and microbial activity in soils cultivated with eucalyptus and pinus Scientia Agricola
Rigobelo,Everlon Cid; Nahas,Ely.
The accumulation and decomposition of litter in soils under forests depend on climatic and biotic conditions. This work evaluated the effect of monthly rainfall and temperature on total bacteria, and on the dehydrogenase and respiration microbial activities. The effects of organic matter, total organic C and soil moisture were also evaluated. Performed from April, 1999 to March, 2000 in an Eucalyptus-cultivated and Pinus-cultivated Oxisol (Typic Haplustox), the study showed that climate and the soil variables affect the total number of bacteria and the microbial activities. The highest air temperatures and rainfall intensities were found during the Summer and, consequently, all the studied variables were maximal during this period. Minimal values varied...

Simulation of a surface spill of different diesel/biodiesel mixtures in an ultisol, using natural attenuation and bioaugmentation/biostimulation Anais da ABC (AABC)
MEYER,DANIEL D.; BEKER,SABRINA A.; HECK,KARINA; PERALBA,MARIA DO CARMO R.; BENTO,FÁTIMA M..
Abstract Accidents caused by leaks and/or spills on soils need to be addressed. Natural attenuation, biostimulation and bioaugmentation can be useful bioremediation strategies for decontamination processes in soils of diesel/biodiesel mixtures. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the degradation rate of the different fuels (B0, B20 and B100) in an ultisol under natural attenuation and biostimulation/bioaugmentation during 60 days of incubation in a controlled microcosm simulating a surface spill over soil. The degradation of different diesel/biodiesel mixtures was monitored for up to 60 days by dehydrogenase activity, respirometry by CO2 release, the most probable number of heterotrophic and degrading microorganism and gas chromatography. The...

Soil microbial response to glucose and phosphorus addition under agricultural systems in the Brazilian Cerrado Anais da ABC (AABC)
FERREIRA,ADÃO S.; SANTOS,MARIA AMELIA DOS; CORRÊA,GILBERTO F..
Conventional tillage (CT) and no-tillage (NT) management systems alter soil nutrient availability and consequently modify soil microbial response to nutrient additions such as carbon (C) and phosphorus (P). The objective of this study is to evaluate microbial response to the addition of C (glucose) and P (Na2HPO4.7H2O) under CT and NT in the brazilian Cerrado. In response to glucose addition, the NT system yielded higher microbial respiration rates and glucose consumption than the CT system. The best microbial response to C addition was after 0 - 12 h incubation in NT and 0 - 24 h in CT. The addition of P produced higher demand under CT than NT. After incubation, biochemical indicators such as microbial respiration, glucose consumption, dehydrogenase...

The Effects of Nicosulfuron and Glyphosate on Microbial Activity of Different Soils Planta Daninha
ŠANTRIC,Lj.; RADIVOJEVIC,Lj.; GAJIC-UMILJENDIC,J.; SARIC-KRSMANOVIC,M.; ÐUROVIC-PEJCEV,R..
ABSTRACT: The effects of the nicosulfuron and glyphosate herbicides on microbial activity in two soils with different physical and chemical properties (loam and sand) were investigated. Nicosulfuron was applied at the rates of 0.3, 0.6, 3.0 and 30.0 mg kg-1 soil and glyphosate at 32.6, 65.2, 326.0 and 3260.0 mg kg-1 soil in the laboratory. Changes in dehydrogenase and urease activity, as well as in microbial biomass carbon, were examined. Samples for the analysis were collected at 3, 7, 14, 30 and 45 days after herbicide application. The results showed that the effects of nicosulfuron and glyphosate depended on treatment rate, duration of activity, test parameters and soil types. In general, application of the herbicides significantly increased the...
